More On Antioxidants Preventing Cancer

As research progresses, we hear more and more on the role of antioxidants preventing cancer. Studies show that areas with diets high in foods that contain antioxidants have lower rates of cancer and it is estimated that 1/3 of cancers are caused by poor diet.

Antioxidants are found in some common foods such as citrus fruits, broccoli, green tea, berries, cabbage, tomatoes, garlic and other fruits and vegetables. Blueberries are among the highest preventive foods as they are loaded with antioxidants.

Antioxidants are thought to have a role in preventing cancer by thwarting the efforts of free radicals to damage your cells. Vitamins C, E, A, Beta Carotene and Selenium are some of the most commonly heard of antioxidants.

Eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables is a great way to get loads of antioxidants and help your body prevent cancer and other disease. These foods have loads of other benefits as well. Raw fruits and vegetables have enzymes that help your body digest foods easier so it has more energy to fight off disease. They are loaded with fiber and low in fat which helps keep up your cardiovascular health. Fruits and vegetables also contain tons of other vitamins that can add to your overall health and well being.

Some foods you might want to eat in order to keep healthy and get lots of antioxidants for preventing cancer and other disease include: orange fruits and vegetables like carrots and cantaloupe which are high in Beta Carotene, broccoli and nuts which are high in vitamin E, cod liver oil which is high in vitamin A, and citrus fruits which are high in vitamin C. Recent studies also show a link between selenium found in meats and whole grain breads and preventing cancer.

Of course, you can get all these cancer preventing antioxidants in pills too, but pills are no substitute for a healthy diet. If you cannot take in enough of the vitamins through normal eating, a supplement may be in order - please check with your physician before taking any pills or changing your eating habits.
