The Calcium - Magnesium Connection
Did you know that Calcium and Magnesium work best when taken together?
They work together to help the blood as well as regulating muscle contraction.
Both need to be present in your body, but don't take a supplement that contains both since magnesium will bind to
the sites where calcium is absorbed, you should take a calcium supplement during 1 meal, and magnesium during another.
How Calcium and Magnesium Work Together
We all know that calcium is critical for strong bones and prevention of osteoporosis, but it also plays an important role in muscle contraction. Calcium ions in the muscle cells are what helps it contract. But of course, once a muscle in contracted you want it to relax again, right? This is where the magnesium comes in as it has a vital role in producing the enzymes and energy necessary to remove the calcium ions. Some symptoms of muscle cramping, tension headaches and anxiety can be caused by magnesium deficiency, especially if you are taking a calcium supplement and have high levels of calcium and low levels of magnesium.
Calcium, Magnesium and IBS
Calcium and Magnesium supplementation can play a large role in relieving symptoms of IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. IBS is a debilitating chronic condition that causes painful stomach cramps and alternating diarrhea and constipation. Calcium can have a constipating effect and magnesium has the opposite acting as a laxative. For people with diarrhea predominant IBS a larger amount of calcium might help, and for IBS constipation a larger amount of magnesium might help. Of course, you would want to check with your doctor before self medicating with anything.
Foods with Calcium, Magnesium
As we all know, calcium is abundant in dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt etc..) and some green leafy vegetables such as spinach and broccoli. Magnesium can be found in nuts, legumes, seeds, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
