Ginko Trees Produce The Medicinal Ginko Leaf
Ginko Biloba, made from the ginko leaf which grows on ginko trees is one of the more popular herbs today. This herb is reputed to relieve a host of ailments including depression, impotence and asthma as well as improve short term memory and circulation. It is reputed to increase blood flow throughout the body and to the brain.
Ginko trees of the oldest trees still around. The ginko leaf is fan shaped and can be used in teas, tinctures or pills. The leaf is also full of antioxidants and is thought to prevent age related symptoms like loss of memory and loss of energy.
Ginko trees are very unusual tree in that they are dioecious meaning that there are male and female trees. The female trees bear a fruit that smells pretty bad. The ginko leaf is light green and grows on the tree in clumps of 5. The tree itself can grow up to 80 feet tall and can be either wide or narrow.
Ginko trees can be grown almost anywhere up to one 3 and the ginko leaf turns a lovely yellow in the fall. This tree is very hardy and has no pests to speak of. It's been around for 15 million years so I guess it must be pretty hardy for the species to survive all that time!
When choosing a spot for planting, beware that this tree can live for over 1500 years and may grow very large overtaking the landscape. Chances are you won’t be around when this happens, but if you eat enough of the leaves, perhaps you will.
