Growing Ginseng
Growing ginseng requires a shady area and lots of patience.
Ginseng is native to Eastern North America and grows from North Florida to Quebec.
It grows in forests and is reputed to have stimulating properties that increase alertness and metabolic rate,
lower blood pressure and cholesterol and help the body remove toxins through the liver.
You will need a shady spot for growing ginseng. Since it grows native in forests, choose a spot that is shaded with
tall trees like a forest. It can be grown from seed, seedlings or roots. When grown from seed it can take up to 7
years to mature! Ginseng should be planted 8" apart (whether you are planting from seeds, seedling or roots) and
roots should be planted 2" down. Seeds should be planted in the spring and roots in the fall.
Ginseng grows to be about 1 foot tall and has leaves consisting of 5 sections.
It blooms in midsummer with greenish yellow flowers and yields red berries.
It is harvested for it's roots which have medicinal properties.
Growing ginseng in a well drained soil is essential.
Plant in 4 foot wide beds with walkways in between.
Make sure the plants receive about 75% shade and keep the beds free from weeds.
In the winter, make sure you layer in a 5" mulch to protect the plants.
