Using Herbs For Anxiety Relief

Using herbs for anxiety relief can be a natural way to alleviate feelings of worry or nervousness. Anxiety affects many people in different ways – and can be anything from a minor feeling of worry once in a while to a debilitating panic attack. If you feel that your anxiety is out of control, you should see a doctor. In addition to what he or she prescribes, you may want to try some of these herbs that can help keep you calm and relieve symptoms of anxiety.

Herbs For Anxiety Relief

Lavendar has soothing and calming effects especially when used in an oil and is great for aromatherapy. The next time you feel anxious out take out some lavender oil, put it on something near you and breath deep!

Chamomile is very calming and soothing. It is mildly sedative so you can also use it before bedtime if you are having trouble sleeping. It is reputed to help relieve cramps and is recommended to alleviate anxiety.

Valerian has tranquilizing effects and is one of the more potent herbs for anxiety relief. Use with caution or you might find yourself too relaxed!

Catnip is soothing for the digestive tract and a mild sedative that is also reputed to relieve headache.

Lemon Balm is a sedative herb that is reputed to relieve tension headache caused by anxiety.

St Johns Wort has been much publicized for it’s uses in treating depression but is also one of the best herbs for anxiety relief. It contains the compound hypercin that has been shown in studies to lessen anxiety and depression. It can also help with insomnia which can add to depressed feelings. St Johns Wort can be taken in a tea or in pill form. It has few side effects but should be avoided if you are pregnant and taking the herb can increase sensitivity to the sun.

Licorice can be more powerful than St Johns Wort in treating depression and anxiety. It tastes great so you can use it to add flavor to teas or other foods. It is safe for normal use but if you abuse it or take it for the long term you may experience headache, water retention and even high blood pressure).
