The Horsetail Herb
The horsetail herb is not one of the most highly publicized herbs but still has many uses of note.
Dating back to the ancient greeks, this herb was used to heal wounds and ulcers, treat tuberculosis and problems
with the kidney and to stop bleeding. It was also used, in it's dried form, for polishing pewter!
This perennial weed has stems that are rich in silica which can help with collagen formation and mend broken bones.
It is known to have diuretic properties which make it good for treating urinary and kidney problems including kidney stones.
It also makes a good topical medicine for wounds, burns and sprains.
Native to North America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, the horsetail herb has a fernlike appearance and is non flowering.
It has hollow stems become covered with silica crystals as the plant is dried. Only the parts of this herb that are above ground
are used for medicinal purposes.
Horsetail herb is available as a dried herb and as a tincture in liquid form. It can be taken as a tea, or used in a compress.
It is recommended for adults to take 6g per day or if taking a tincture use as directed on the bottle.
There are few side effects of this herb but it does have diuretic properties so please consult a physician before taking this
herb especially if you are under a doctors care for congestive heart failure or currently taking digoxin.
