Herbal Stress Medication
There are many plants that can act as herbal stress medication and can be a more natural (and less harmful) way to deal with stress and anxiety. Of course, you should discuss any methods of treatment, whether they be herbal or otherwise, with your doctor to make sure they won’t have an adverse reaction with any other drugs you are on or illnesses you may have.
Plants have been used for centuries as herbal stress medication. Like any other medication, they should be taken in the appropriate doses as taking too much can cause adverse side effects. Some herbs commonly used to treat stress or anxiety include:
St Johns Wort
This herb has been much publicized for it's uses in treating depression but can also act as an herbal stress medication. It contains the compound hypercin that has been shown in studies to lessen anxiety and depression. It can also help with insomnia which can add to depressed feelings. St Johns Wort can be taken in a tea or in pill form. It has few side effects but should be avoided if you are pregnant and taking the herb can increase sensitivity to the sun.
Chamomile
This relaxing herb can be used in teas and is great if you have trouble sleeping. It is reputed to help relieve cramps and is recommended to alleviate anxiety.
Valerian
This herb has strong calming properties. It is an antispasmodic and can be used as a sedative. Be careful when taking valerian as an herbal stress medication as it can be rather potent.
Catnip
Catnip is soothing for the digestive tract and a mild sedative. It might not seem that way by looking at how it effects your cat!
Licorice
Licorice can be more powerful than St Johns Wort in treating depression. It tastes great so you can use it to add flavor to teas or other foods. It is safe for normal use but if you abuse it or take it for the long term you may experience headache, water retention and even high blood pressure).
Ginko Biloba
Ginko helps blood flow to the brain and may have a role in treating depression and anxiety. Studies have shown that it can enhance mood.
