Recent vitamin D information suggests that eating vitamin D foods and getting a minimal amount of sun can help your body to make this important vitamin that can fight osteoporosis and cancer. Although some off the shelf foods are now fortified with this vitamin, the best way for your body to get it is to manufacture it by sun exposure, something most are reluctant to do for fear of skin cancer.

Vitamin D is unusual in that your body can actually make it. Unprotected exposure to the sun, even as little as 15 minutes a day 3 or 4 days a week, can be enough to supply your body with all the vitamin D it needs. Applying sun screen prohibits the necessary reactions from happening.
In additions to helping build strong bones, recent Vitamin D information shows that it can also help fight osteoporosis and may have a role in preventing breast, colon and prostate cancer. Some early research in using this vitamin to fight those cancers is promising. Vitamin D is essential in helping the body absorb calcium.
Natural vitamin D foods include chicken liver, eggs, fatty fish like salmon and mackerel and cod liver oil. Since current food production practices strip most of the vitamins and minerals from our foods, many off the shelf products are now fortified with vitamins in the hopes of replacing some of the nutrients necessary for good health. Some foods fortified vitamin d foods include milk, margarine and some cereals. You’ll have to rely on the food labels to tell you which ones are fortified with this vitamin.
