Vitamin C & Allergies
Is there a connection between Vitamin C & allergies?
Some people think so including the Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling Ph.D. who claimed that you could combat your allergies with this potent antioxidant. The thinking is that you may need to take lots of the vitamin, but eventually you will reach a level that will alleviate allergies.
I'm no doctor, but the connection between Vitamin C & allergies does make sense. First off, Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that is reputed to help strengthen the immune system among other things.
Allergies are the bodies immune system reacting (or overreacting) to things like pollen and dander which are harmless to people without allergies. Secondly, Vitamin C is an antihistamine which can help to block inflammation such as those produced when the body is responding to allergens. Makes sense, right?
Taking Vitamin C to control allergies may be something you want to talk to your doctor about. You may have to shop around to find a doctor that is open minded enough to see the vitamin C & allergies connection but it may be worth a try. Taking more of the vitamin has got to be better for you than loading up on over the counter and prescription drugs to control allergies, doesn't it?
Vitamin C is water soluble so any excess is secreted in your urine. One bad effect from taking too much may be that you get a little crampy and may have loose bowels - not very pleasant but just back off on the dosage if it effects you this way. You can get vitamin C naturally from many foods including citrus fruits, strawberries, green peppers, tomatoes, broccoli and other fruits and veggies. Of course you can always take a vitamin supplement to more closely monitor the exact amount you are taking.
Please consult with your doctor before attempting any self medication or taking any new vitamins or supplements.
